Absolutes
While seeing “Revenge of the Sith” for the second time the other day, something in the dialog jumped out at me. I think George Lucas may have been taking a little jab at President Bush. After Anakin (Darth Vader) had already turned to the dark side there is an exchange between Anakin and Obi-Wan that seemed very similar to something Bush said in a speech back in 2001. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, you tell me.
From “Revenge of the Sith”:
Anakin Skywalker: If you’re not with me… then you’re my enemy!
Obi-Wan: Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
From “Bush’s 2001 speech:
George Bush: Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.
I’d like to see someone ask George Lucas if there was any symbolism behind this. It sure had a similar feel. And of course everyone know how much Hollywood loves ultra-conservatives!
